A while ago I was lucky enough to go and spend some time working at Kumpa Primary School in the Massai, Kenya. I stayed with the most incredible family who took me in and treated me as their own.
The school is located in the beautiful Masai Mara but it is extremely poor and there is little or no water or food for the children. Many of the children walk for over an hour to get to the school and as they come from poor families many of them haven't had breakfast and then if there is no food at school they don't get to eat until they get back home. We have given donations of food for the school when we can,but obviously this is not a long term solution.
After speaking to Mary, the mother of my host family and teacher at the school, about how we can create a long term solution. They had a vegetable garden and a greenhouse which had been working well but the wild donkeys had knocked down the fence as it wasn't secure enough, so the garden had been ruined.
So we are looking to create a vegetable garden for the school and provide the money for a strong fence and gate, plus the tools and the seeds to get going.
Our aim is to be able to provide food for the school and also for the children to learn how to grow the vegetables so they also gain a valuable skill.
The garden will be an essential part of the school and will help to provide fresh food for the children who quite often survive on one meal a day. It will also allow the children to learn gardening skills as part of their school curriculum.
